THE construction of the Mutare artificial intelligence (AI) powered GMB silos is now 98% complete, an encouraging development that will see the government achieve its target of establishing smart silos at 14 sites across the country within two years.
The Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Dr Anxious Masuka told ZBC News after a familiarisation tour in Mutare on Thursday, that there will be enhanced monitoring and quality control of the country’s grain reserves through the use of smart technologies.
“Today, we are inspecting AI-powered smart silos ahead of the expected commissioning by His Excellency, the President, Dr E.D. Mnangagwa, in the near future, perhaps on the 29th of October, which is next Wednesday. These smart silos are at 98% completion. What is just left is the outstanding paving work and final testing of the plant. So, we should be ready, and we expect a very big crowd to celebrate this transformation in the agricultural sector,” said Dr Masuka.
“The President has instructed that we complete 14 sites. He commissioned the Kwekwe Silos on the 5th of May this year. Here in Mutare, the silos are expected to be commissioned soon. We will then proceed to Mhangura, Mvurwi, and other areas until all 14 sites are complete within the next two years,” he said.
The AI-powered silos are expected to revolutionise grain storage and management through smart technologies that enhance monitoring, efficiency, and quality control.
The initiative is part of Zimbabwe’s broader vision to strengthen national food security, reduce post-harvest losses, and boost agricultural productivity in line with Vision 2030
